OBSERVATIONS SERIES

2019 Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir

Nestled within the iconic Russian River Valley, Bootlegger’s Hill Vineyard stands as a testament to its fruitful history as an apple orchard. Sheltered by towering redwoods, this revered site enjoys a magnificently cool climate with well-draining Goldridge soils that impart unparalleled intensity, elegance, and allure.

In crafting our 2019 Observations Series Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir, we embraced the essence of this esteemed vineyard with meticulous care. Unlike its counterpart in the Estate Series, this Pinot Noir utilized 20% whole cluster, revealing a distinct rustic and savory quality. Furthermore, only two of the same clones, 23 and CC, were used, allowing for a more nuanced expression of Bootlegger’s Hill terroir. Notes of forest floor and fresh herbs intertwine seamlessly with bright red strawberries, Rainier cherries, and a hint of sarsaparilla. Balanced yet refined, perfectly integrated tannins create a mesmerizing, lengthy finish.

Fact of Note: The first and last pick of the vineyard were more than a month apart.

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

THE RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY IS hallowed ground for lovers of great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Here, the vines are submersed in clockwork fog and daytime temperature swings, which preserve the natural acidity essential to elegant, age-worthy wines. We work with a handful of the most beloved vineyards from this remarkable wine region considered by many to be the heartland of California Pinot Noir.

Within Russian River Valley, in a town tucked away from the main roads, you’ll find a community ranging from writer to artisan. The town of Graton is an area where local winemakers and growers take a respite and enjoy some of the many popular yet under-the-radar restaurants. During harvest, the little town is full of life and bustling.
